Databook on Waste Management in the Republic of Korea and Japan

Japan and the Republic of Korea are geographically close and share common challenges in the field of resource circulation and waste management; however, differences in statistical frameworks and definitions have made it difficult to directly compare statistical figures between the two countries. To address this issue, the Material Cycles Division of the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) collaborated with the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) of the Republic of Korea to compile the “Databook on Waste Management in the Republic of Korea and Japan.” This online data book reorganizes existing published statistics and publicly available materials into a format that enables cross-country comparison.

Database on municipal solid waste management in the Asia-Pacific Region (DaMSAR)

We have compiled data on municipal solid waste (MSW) related to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Indicator 11.6.1 ("Proportion of municipal solid waste collected and managed in controlled facilities out of total municipal waste generated, by cities"), and built a database on municipal solid waste management in the Asia-Pacific Region (DaMSAR). The database would be relevant for policymakers and practitioners who are involved in monitoring progress on improving MSW management. The initial set of data has been extracted from the reports (published in and after 2011) of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) projects which have been conducted in 18 countries in the Asia-Pacific Region.

Lifespan database for Vehicles, Equipment, and Structures: LiVES

The database LiVES has been compiled through a review of lifespan data of commodities reported in statistical surveys by the national government and other public organizations, research papers, reports by industry associations, and other publications. It includes over 1300 lifespan data that had been surveyed and estimated for vehicles, equipment, buildings and construction in 16 countries, and provides a data retrieval service by category of commodities.
