<Current major research themes>

- Assessment and design of material cycles and waste management system and relevant policies

Is recycling good for the environment? What matters require particular attention in waste treatment and recycling? To answer questions such as these, I conduct research to assess various material cycles and waste management systems and relevant policies, and to design appropriate systems and policies. The methods used include life cycle assessment (LCA), material flow analysis (MFA), environmental accounting, and input-output analysis (IOA).
For instance, I have engaged in LCA for container and packaging recycling, development of indicators for describing society’s metabolism based on MFA, and the development of environmental accounting framework for municipal solid waste management.

- Assessment and design of forest sector carbon cycles and relevant climate policies

To what degree do forests and wood products contribute to the mitigation of climate change? How should they be treated in international frameworks such as the Kyoto Protocol? To answer questions such as these, I estimate the carbon flows and stocks associated with forests and wood products and consider measures in the forest sector to mitigate climate change.
For instance, I have conducted an estimation of the accumulated carbon in wood products in major countries and assessment of the treatment of carbon sinks such as forests in the Kyoto Protocol.
